Professor Emeritus, Earth, Ocean & Atmospheric Sci, Florida State University - USA
Biography:
Dr. MacDonald is an oceanographer studying carbon cycling at basin and site scales. He uses synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite images to quantify the magnitude and distribution of natural hydrocarbon seeps across the Gulf of Mexico. His work has been the basis for the NRC estimates of the total natural seep input for the Gulf. During the DWH oil spill, his early assessments of the rate of discharge alerted the public regarding the true scale of the process. He has pioneered techniques of in situ instrumentation and autonomous imaging for quantifying the effects of variable seafloor conditions on hydrocarbon and gas hydrate stability.
